Copycat McDonald’s McMuffins: Ingredients & Equipment
To make Copycat McDonald’s McMuffins, you will need …
Ingredients
- ground pork breakfast sausage – If you’re looking for a leaner option, turkey sausage can be a healthier substitute for traditional pork sausage. For a vegetarian or vegan version, opt for plant-based sausage patties made from ingredients like mushrooms, soy, or beans.
- whole large eggs – To reduce cholesterol and fat content, you can use egg whites instead of whole eggs. If you prefer your eggs scrambled, you can prepare them that way before adding to the sandwich.
- English muffins – For a healthier twist, opt for whole wheat or multigrain English muffins, which provide more fiber and nutrients. If you have gluten sensitivities or allergies, you can use gluten-free English muffins.
- butter – If you’re looking to reduce saturated fat, you can use margarine or a plant-based butter substitute.
- American cheese – While American cheese is the classic choice, feel free to experiment with different cheese varieties to change up the flavor profile. Cheddar, Swiss, or Pepper Jack Cheese are all great options. If you’re lactose intolerant or following a vegan diet, there are many dairy-free cheese alternatives available.

- Consider adding sliced tomatoes, spinach, or avocado slices for added freshness and nutrition.
Equipment
- skillet or griddle and spatula
- egg molds
- baking sheet

Reheating McMuffins
In the oven
To reheat Sausage, Egg, and Cheese McMuffins in the oven, follow these steps:
- Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC) to ensure it’s hot and ready when you’re ready to reheat the McMuffins.
- Wrap in Aluminum Foil: Individually wrap each Sausage, Egg, and Cheese McMuffin in aluminum foil. Wrapping them in foil will help retain moisture and prevent them from drying out during the reheating process.
- Place on Baking Sheet: Arrange the wrapped McMuffins on a baking sheet. Ensure they are spaced apart and not stacked on top of each other for even heating.
- Reheat: Place the baking sheet with the wrapped McMuffins in the preheated oven. Allow them to reheat for approximately 10-15 minutes. The exact time may vary based on your oven and the initial temperature of the sandwiches.
- Check for Doneness: After the designated time, carefully open one of the foil-wrapped McMuffins to check for doneness. Ensure that the sausage is hot, the egg is heated through, and the cheese is melted.
- Serve: Once the Sausage, Egg, and Cheese McMuffins are adequately reheated, remove them from the oven, unwrap them from the foil, and serve immediately.
Reheating in the oven is an excellent method to maintain the sandwich’s texture and flavor while ensuring even heating. It may take a bit longer than the microwave, but the result is a warm and delicious McMuffin that closely resembles its freshly made counterpart.
In the microwave
To reheat Sausage, Egg, and Cheese McMuffins in the microwave, follow these steps:
- Wrap in a Paper Towel: Place the Sausage, Egg, and Cheese McMuffin on a microwave-safe plate. To prevent moisture loss and to help maintain the sandwich’s texture, wrap it loosely in a paper towel.
- Microwave: Set your microwave to medium power or around 50% power. Microwaving on medium power helps prevent the sandwich from becoming too tough or overcooking.
- Microwave Time: Microwave the wrapped McMuffin for 30-60 seconds. Start with 30 seconds, and then check to see if it’s heated to your desired temperature. If it needs more time, continue microwaving in 10-15 second intervals until it’s hot throughout.
- Check and Adjust: Be careful not to overheat, as it can make the sandwich dry. Check the McMuffin after each interval to ensure it’s heated evenly and not overheated.
- Serve: Once the Sausage, Egg, and Cheese McMuffin is heated to your liking, carefully remove it from the microwave, unwrap it, and enjoy!
Microwaving times may vary depending on your microwave’s wattage and the starting temperature of the McMuffin, so it’s essential to monitor it closely to prevent overheating. This method is quick and convenient for reheating, but keep in mind that the texture may not be as crispy as when it’s freshly toasted in the oven or under a broiler.

Sausage Egg and Cheese McMuffins
Equipment
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground pork breakfast sausage
- 6 large eggs
- 6 English muffins
- 3 tablespoons butter
- 6 slices American cheese
Instructions
- Preheat the broiler to high heat.
- Take the sausage and shape it into 6 evenly-sized, thin patties. Use your thumb to create a small indentation in the center of each patty. This helps maintain their shape and prevents them from plumping up while cooking. Place the patties on a plate.
- Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the sausage patties into the pan without overcrowding; you may need to cook them in batches.
- Cook the sausage patties until they are browned on both sides, and their internal temperature reaches 165ยฐF, which should take about 8-10 minutes. Place the cooked patties on a paper towel to absorb any excess grease.
- Wipe the skillet or griddle clean and return it to medium-low heat. Lightly spray it with cooking spray. Take a 3-inch heat-safe circle mold, lightly coat it with cooking spray, and place it in the skillet.
- Crack 1 egg into the center of the mold and immediately break the yolk. Pour 2 tablespoons of water around the mold, then cover the pan or griddle with a lid. Cook for approximately 4 minutes or until the egg is fully set and cooked through. Transfer the cooked egg to a plate and repeat the process with the remaining eggs.
- While you're cooking the eggs, place the English muffins, cut side up, on a baking sheet. Put them under the broiler and toast them to your preferred level of crispiness, being careful to prevent burning.
- On the bottom half of each muffin, add a slice of cheese and allow it to melt.
- Assemble your Sausage, Egg, and Cheese McMuffins by placing a cooked sausage patty on top of the melted cheese, followed by the cooked egg. Complete the sandwich with the top half of the English muffin.
- Serve immediately and enjoy your homemade McMuffins!

I make these all of the time! However, for a quicker method, I use the frozen pork sausage patties, a tiny skillet that makes the perfect size egg for sandwiches & I use the toaster for the English muffins. These make things sooooo much faster! The tiny skillet can usually be found in the grocery store hanging on one of those strips in random isles…..likely the cereal isle. We also like making these without the egg & with only sausage & cheese!
