It’s amazing the things you learn in 4 years!!

I had this Old-Fashioned Potato Salad was near the top of my re-make list because it’s a summer staple in our house and it totally reminds me of something my grandma would have made! Plus, with it being summer and all, what better time to re-share it?!
One of my favorite things about summer is all of the yummy food! No surprise there! ๐ We cookout almost every weekend, and often throughout the week. Because of all of these cookouts, we have quite an array of side dishes we enjoy. One of my favorites is this Old-Fashioned Potato Salad – which is kind of funny because of how much I hated potato salad as a kid!
Yeah, I was that kid ……
Now, I’ll gladly take a spoonful of potato salad – and I’m more than happy to share it with friends and family! This is a no-frills, classic, old-fashioned potato salad! Your whole family is going to love it!

Thanks for stopping by Justine! Hope to see you again soon ๐
I've never thought to add vinegar but I always love the tang that it gives. Thanks so much for sharing at our party this week.
Thanks Terry! Believe it or not, I was never a fan of potato salad growing up … I tried so many versions before settling with this one!
To this recipe, I add Chopped Dill Pickles.and slice Olives.
Yes, this was my Grandmothers Recipe.to.
Nothing beats homemade potato salad! We love to eat it while it's still warm. Thanks for sharing.
I like it warm and cold! Nothing beats homemade potato salad, except for chocolate ๐ Chocolate will win every time!
What type of mayo? Real or miracle whip??
You can use whichever you prefer.
Miracle whip is not mayo..it is salad dressing!..but use it if you like it.
After using Mayo for a few years, someone suggested miracle whip. I found it a big Improvement in my recipes and specially potato salad. No vinegar needed, just simply use sweet pickle relish and then throw in a little sugar. Huge improvement.
Came here from the Blissful and Domestic link up party. I would have never thought of adding the vinegar but it sounds interesting. I will have to give that a try! It looks tasty ๐
Thanks for stopping by! When you try it, come back and let me know if you liked the addition of vinegar ๐
Similar to my Mom's, cool!
Thanks for stopping by Debra! This is my absolute favorite way to make potato salad, glad to hear I'm not alone ๐

I just love homemade potato salad and classic is my husband's favorite. We'll have to try your recipe!
I totally love a great classic potato salad, not sure how I could survive summer cookouts without it! Can't wait to try yours!
This looks delicious….it reminds me of my Grandma's potato salad! Perfection!
I need to re-do so many of my old photos, and it really is amazing what you learn over the years! These photos are gorgeous, Jamie, and this potato salad looks like a summertime must!
I always add a bit of sugar to balance the vinegar. If you use miracle whip the sugar is in that. I use Hellmans. Pa Dutch way!!
also use a little sugar!!
My family recipe is like this PLUS Crispy Diced Bacon, Diced Red Onions, and topped with Sliced Hard Boiled Eggs…It's always on the menu for the 4th!
My Mom's called for 1,2,3,4 – 1 tbsp. vinegar, 2 tbsp. milk, 3 tbsp. sugar and 4 tbsp. of Mayo. Mix all together add onion and stir into potatoes. It's the best.
I add a little whipping cream (not whipped cream( so good & creamy!!!
Made this for a family bbq and everybody loved. It will definitely become a family favourite!
Finally,! Someone else that uses mustard! Instead of vinegar, I add a little pickle relish.
She used vinegar, too.
Might be a silly question but do you peel the potatoes or leave the skin on? Iโve never made potato salad before but Iโve been eyeing this recipe forever so Iโm making it for the weekend with some bbq pork skewers.
Make mine the same way except for the celery. My family doesn't care for celery. Delicious warm or cold.
I make this basically the same except I use celery seeds for the celery flavor.
I grew up with this recipe. My daughter likes more mustard. Now I have a hankerin for it this weekend. Love it. There’s hundreds of different recipes but this is the best IMHO. Thank you! ๐
I am going to try this ! I love trying new ways of making things and then customizing!
My My mother made the same old fashioned potato salad , skipping the eggs and adding diced crisp apple, it’s a favourite in this house
.
This recipe makes me hungry for potato salad. It is very similar to how I make it except instead of vinegar I use dill pickle juice. I like the tang it gives.
I’m not a big fan of mayo, so I use a mix of 1 part mayo to 2 parts Greek yogurt . .Otherwise my dressing is very similar to this, I love the addition of dijon & also the ACV..
thank you for your potato salad recipe. I make mine the same way; instead of vinegar I like dill pickles in my salad. So I cube my potatoes and gentle toss w/ dill pickle juice to coat potatoes. I would say about a TB. then I add my ingredients and mayo and mustard and gentle coat. Refreg. so it is nice and cold. Then I let it sit out as I set the table so it is not cold, cold salad…
Great recipe and refreshing to see potato salad without pickles! Family favorite, thanks.
This is essentially how make potato salad with one exception. While the potatoes are still warm I splash them with a vinaigrette I make with vinegar, olive oil, mustard, sugar, salt and pepper. When warm the potatoes absorb this making them more flavorful. I usually refrigerate the mixture overnight and finish the salad two hours before serving it the next day when I add the onion, celery and mayo. I also add celery seeds to enhance that flavor and serve it after it has stood in the fridge for a couple hours.
Great recipe! Just like my family has made forever. The vinegar seems to balance the flavors. I slice extra eggs on top and sprinkle with paprika. Reminds me of summer picnics as a kid. Wonderful stuff!
What type of onion do you use?
I usually use a sweet onion – but any white or yellow onion should be fine.
This looks so good! Itโs so hard to find the classic recipe that everyone loves!
Thanks for sharing! Does it keep long?
I would use it up within 3-5 days.
Great recipe! Flavorful and easy!
Im so anxious to try this recipe. My moms old recipe includes green onions instead of white, lots of sweet relish, mayo, eggs and celery seeds.
I hope you enjoy this version! I would love to hear your thoughts if you do make it.
Hi,
What kind of potato do you use?
I used russet potatoes – but this will work with other varieties as well.
The potato salad was delicious. Had never used vinegar before but it added a different taste. My husband doesnโt like celery so I added celery seeds instead. Looking forward to trying some of your other recipes.
Thanks for stopping by, Bille! I hope you find a few more recipes to enjoy! ๐
Don’t forget to use thin skin potatoes such as red or Yukon gold. Use your Instapot for the hard boiled eggs. 4 minutes pressure and I just let it come to pressure slowly.
Your recipe is the closest I’ve ever gotten to my mom’s (none of us ever paid attention when she made it). It’s so good! I already ate at least 2 servings before I even refrigerated it, and it’s going to be even better later. Thank you!
Thanks for a great old fashioned recipe for potato salad. I was so happy to find this because it appeared closest to how my Mom always made it. I am not fond of potato salad with relish or dill, as many recipes call for. This recipe is great as written, but to bring it closer to Mom’s, I tweaked by adding a tablespoon of sugar to balance the vinegar and also a 1/4 teaspoon of celery seed. Perfect!
Approximately how many people would this serve?
about 8 to 10 people.
Yummyโฆthank you for your recipe, Itโs definitely goong to my favorites ๐
Just made this today, reminds me of my mothers too, except she used green pepper instead of celery but she may have used celery seed, I wish I had asked for recipes when she was still alive, trying to reproduce what I can remember.
My grandma used pickle juice, but no pickles. She also added radishes. It was once recipe we all loved, and were sad to never find the recipe written down anywhere. All of us grandkids are still attempting to find a potatoe salad recipe that is close to hers. I’m going to try this one with those couple of tweaks. I’m sure it will be close.
I first made this potato salad back in 2016 and have loved it ever since! Made again tonight and thought Iโd leave you a comment of appreciation. ๐I have a lot more cooking experience now but not back then and I loved and still love this simple delicious old fashioned potato salad!
I appreciate your feedback so much, and I’m so glad you found my recipe and gave it a try! All the best!!
I cook my potatoes with the skin on it makes for a better taste
Got to be Dukes
My mom always made potato salad with eggs green onion diced radishโs and celery. If am out of celery Sometimes I add frozen green peas of course thawed.
I donโt care for pickle relish, olives or diced pickles. I always just mix mustard with miracle whip. And sliced eggs on top with paprika sprinkled on top.
This is a really great tasting and simple recipe!
I added red onion chopped and bacon bits this recipe is great I doubled everything as Iโm hosting a party tomorrow!
Yes, same Recipe except I use mustard instead of vinegar and I add Crispy Bacon, my Family and friends Love it!!..Thanks!
Absolutely love this recipe, thks for sharing
Very easy and easily understandable
Loved this recipe because it is truly ‘old fashioned ‘ as was my mother’s potato salad. She was an amazing cook.
The basic recipe is identical with these extras which you could pick and choose. I prefer everything added in for lots of color and extra flavor.
I chop the onion very fine and make sure to use a purple onion.
1/4 cup finely chopped green bell pepper
1/4 to 1/2 cup finely chopped dill pickles
a 4 oz jar of pimento peppers drained and added
Sprinkle celery seed throughout the salad.
Top surface of the salad with paprika
