Best Chocolate Pudding Recipe
One of my goals this year is to eliminate more โconvenience foodโ from my familyโs diet. My family doesnโt really eat a lot of pre-packaged food, but Iโm still hoping to eliminate most, if not all, of it from our house.
I like knowing I can make something just as easily as I can dump it out of a package. I also like knowing that I can say the name of every single ingredient in a recipe. Itโs the little things, ya know?
Before Christmas, I sat down, dug through some of my old handwritten recipes, and found this little gem for homemade chocolate pudding. Itโs super simple to make. I forgot how much my kids love this dessert! And heck, me too! (By the way, I love those old handwritten recipes โ donโt you?!)
Iโm super excited. I have another favorite snack item of mine I can just make at home.
Yโall, I crave chocolate ALL THE TIME. Thankfully, I donโt have to spend a ton of money every time the urge arises. I can just make a simple treat like this chocolate pudding at home! I hope you enjoy it as well!

Ingredients
- sugar, cornstarch, and salt – your first ingredients make up the base of the pudding.
- cocoa powder – for chocolatey deliciousness!

- vanilla extract – as in most sweet treats, a hint of vanilla extract really โpumps upโ the other ingredients and brings out their flavor. Donโt leave it out, even if it seems odd!

How to make Homemade Chocolate Pudding
First, mix your ingredients. Whisk together the sugar, baking cocoa, cornstarch, and salt in a heavy saucepan. Gradually add milk, whisking to combine.
Next, cook the ingredients. Bring your mixture to a boil over medium heat, whisking occasionally. Once the mixture comes to a boil, continue to boil and whisk continuously for 2 minutes.
Finally, remove it from the heat, chill it, and serve! Remove your pudding from the heat. Stir in your butter and vanilla extract. Spoon it into individual serving dishes, then chill it until youโre ready to chow down!
Homemade Chocolate Pudding: FAQs
About 15 minutes. 10 of that is cooking, and 5 of that is hands-on prep time.
Any kind you like! We tend to use whole milk for the super-creamy taste it brings, but weโve also tried it with 2%, 1%, etc., and the pudding was still phenomenal.
I wouldnโt, as the texture changes when you thaw it out. Unless you like pudding pops, then go ahead!
Use an airtight container; itโll be fine for 3-4 days!
Use plastic wrap! Place it directly on top of the pudding with no air bubbles. Itโll stop the weird, icky skin from forming.
