Hawaiian Dogs
I’m not much of a hot dog eater – but having young children pretty much obligates me to make them on occasion.
I don’t really do boring dogs at our house, instead, I like to come up with different kinds of toppings to make them fun and more tolerable for me (although my kiddos are quite content with just the regular ol’ ketchup and mustard!).
I love the idea of having a sweet, spicy, and salty combo – so I came up with these Hawaiian Hot Dogs!
If I were a betting person, I’d bet they don’t necessarily eat stuff like this in Hawaii, but just go with me here!!
These hot dogs are wrapped up in bacon and grilled (carefully – you’ll wanna watch those flames with the bacon grease!) – and then they are topped off with spicy pineapple salsa. Mayo or BBQ sauce would be good condiments to add if you’re so inclined – although they’re just as good without it!
Even if you’re not a huge fan of hot dogs like me, you’re going to love this recipe, I guarantee it. It’s just so flavorful and the hot dogs turn out so crunchy! Enjoy!
Hawaiian Hot Dogs: Ingredients & Equipment
For this Hawaiian Hot Dogs recipe, you will need …
Ingredients
- hot dogs and hot dog buns – grab your favorite for these Hawaiian dogs!
- bacon – you’ll wrap the hot dogs in these. Adds a bit of crunch and a lot of flavors!
- pineapple, red onion, jalapeno, lime juice, and cilantro – these come together to form your Hawaiian pineapple salsa, which you’ll use to top your hot dogs. It is so, so good, y’all!
- BBQ sauce and/or mayo – your optional condiments!
Equipment
- medium bowl – to mix your pineapple salsa.
- grill – to, well, grill the hot dogs! Though of course, you can cook them any way you’d like.
Hawaiian Hot Dogs: FAQs
Nope, you’ll cook them while they’re on the grill. However, I’ve had a few people partially cook them beforehand for extra crispiness! It’s up to you!
If you truly hate it, you can leave it out. I know it’s very gross to some people. (Apparently, it’s a genetic thing?!) BUT … it really helps cool down the salsa a little if you’re sensitive to heat.
Use your favorite, you really can’t go wrong here. BUT, I personally really like any hot dog bun that has a hint of sweetness to it when it comes to Hawaiian Hot Dogs. If you have Hawaiian sweet hot dog buns or potato-based buns at your store, grab those!
Not at all, although I’m told cooked/grilled pineapple tastes just as lovely in the salsa as fresh, raw pineapple. Try it out!
Just 30 minutes! It’ll take 10 minutes to prepare them and 20 minutes to cook them.
8 servings/8 dogs! Probably enough for a family cookout, though if you need more, the recipe is easily doubled.

Equipment
Ingredients
- 1 package hot dogs 16 oz.
- 8 slices bacon
- 8 hot dog buns
- 1 can pineapple tidbits, drained 8 oz.
- ¼ cup red onion chopped
- 1 jalapeno seeded and chopped
- 2 tablespoons lime juice
- a small handful of cilantro chopped
- ¼ cup BBQ sauce
- ¼ cup mayonnaise
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, combine the pineapple, red onion, jalapeno, lime juice and cilantro. Mix well. Refrigerate until serving time.
- In a separate small bowl, stir together the BBQ Sauce and mayo until well combined. Refrigerate until serving time.
- Preheat grill.
- Wrap each hot dog in a slice of bacon, overlapping slightly. Secure the loose end with a toothpick. Grill, turning occasionally until the bacon is crisp and the hot dog is heated through.
- To serve, remove the toothpick from the hot dog. Place a hot dog in a bun and top with the pineapple salsa.
- Serve with BBQ sauce mixture, if desired.
Notes
- I personally really like any hot dog bun that has a hint of sweetness to it when it comes to Hawaiian hot dogs. If you have Hawaiian sweet hot dog buns or potato-based buns at your store, grab those!
- It's better to use thinner bacon for this recipe so it crisps up – use caution when grilling it, though!
