Iowa Ham Salad: A Midwest Classic
Iowa Ham Salad is a beloved Midwest tradition that perfectly combines creamy, tangy, and savory flavors. Whether enjoyed on crackers, in a sandwich or as a simple side dish, this versatile dish has stood the test of time. Letโs dive into what makes this iconic ham salad recipe so special and why itโs a must-try for your next gathering.
What is Iowa Ham Salad?
Iowa Ham Salad is a creamy spread made with finely chopped ham, mayonnaise, mustard, and a blend of sweet and savory ingredients like relish, onion, and celery. Itโs a staple in many Midwestern kitchens due to its simplicity, affordability, and flexibility. For those who grew up in Iowa or surrounding areas, itโs a dish that often graced family gatherings, potlucks, and picnics.
Why a Ham Salad Sandwich Is a Perfect Lunch Option
Ham salad sandwiches are a satisfying and flavorful way to enjoy this dish. Spread generously on soft white bread or a hearty multigrain bun, the creamy filling pairs beautifully with the breadโs texture. The sweet tang of pickle relish and crunch of celery add layers of flavor and texture that elevate a simple sandwich into a delightful meal. Pair your ham salad sandwich with chips or a crisp side salad for a well-rounded lunch.
Looking for Variations? Try Bologna Salad!
Did you know you can substitute bologna for ham to create another classic variation known as bologna salad? This budget-friendly option provides a similar creamy texture and savory taste. The use of bologna also gives the salad a nostalgic, old-fashioned feel, making it a great way to recreate memories of childhood meals.
Tips for Customizing Your Ham Salad Recipe
One of the best things about ham salad is how customizable it is. Add chopped hard-boiled eggs for extra protein, use Dijon mustard for a tangy twist, or toss in some shredded cheese for added richness. Whether youโre using ham or opting for bologna salad, the possibilities are endless.
Why Iowa Ham Salad Is Perfect for Any Occasion
From casual family lunches to potluck gatherings, Iowa Ham Salad shines as a versatile dish that can be dressed up or down. Its creamy texture and balanced flavors make it a crowd-pleaser every time. Whether youโre enjoying a classic ham salad sandwich or trying a new twist like bologna salad, this dish is sure to become a staple in your recipe collection.
So, next time youโre searching for a simple yet flavorful dish, give Iowa Ham Salad a try. Itโs comfort food at its finest and a true taste of the Midwest!
Ham Salad Recipe: Ingredients and Equipment
To make this Ham Salad recipe, you will need …
Ingredients
- fully cooked ham – This is a great recipe to use leftover holiday ham! No ham? Replace ham with finely chopped bologna for a budget-friendly and nostalgic twist. Alternatively, use leftover cooked turkey or chicken for a leaner protein option. For a seafood twist, substitute with flaked canned tuna or salmon.
- sweet pickle relish – If you prefer less sweetness, swap sweet pickle relish with finely chopped dill pickles. For a briny, tangy alternative, use capers sparingly. Try Bread and Butter Pickles for a slightly sweet but less sugary option.
- onion – I usually use a sweet onion. However, green onions add a mild, fresh flavor compared to regular onions. Use shallots for a sweeter and subtler onion flavor. Chives are perfect for a delicate onion-like taste.
- celery – Finely diced cucumber can add a refreshing crunch and be used in place of the celery. Add bell peppers for a crisp and colorful addition. Also, radishes provide a crunchy, peppery bite.
- mayo – any kind you like. Or, try Greek Yogurt for a lighter, tangy alternative instead of mayonnaise. Sour Cream adds creaminess with a slightly tart flavor. For a dairy-free substitute, try mashed avocado.
- yellow mustard – Use Dijon for a more refined, tangy flavor. Try honey mustard, adding sweetness for a unique flavor profile. For a bolder and more robust taste, use spicy brown mustard.
- crackers or bread – for serving
Equipment
- food processor or a knife with a steady hand
- large bowl
- spatula or spoon for mixing

Oh man, mom used to make it (with a meat grinder, the food processor of yore) and yes with the eggs. I like it either way. Thanks, as I had looked everywhere for her recipe with no luck.

My mother made this but used balogna because her family couldnt afford ham. I never knew it wasn’t ham until I grew up. She was from Pennsylvania.

I halved this recipe and used deli old fashioned ham. I didnโt have sweet relish so minced up some bread and butter pickles. It was delicious with crackers or in a sandwich. Iโll definitely make it again.
Rebecca
This was the perfect way to use up my leftover Christmas ham! It turned out great! Thanks
Mike
Whipped up a double batch tonight and it was awesome. One word of caution would be to add the mayo in segments. 2 cups of Mayo in a double batch wouldโve been way too soupy.
Thanks for this easy Prash recipe!

I never had ham salad until my wife turned it on to me. I’m from Texas and my wife is from Vermont so we get lots of diversity in our recipes. I was at her Mom & Dads house and Dad made it. I loved it! I never got the recipe from him before he died. This sounds just like the mixture he made. Going to try it once we have leftover ham. Thank you for the recipe.

My mom would usually use Baloney if she didn’t have ham. You all need to grill it like a grilled cheese. OMG, it is wonderful.
Linda
My mom when I was little used to make it with a can of spam using a meat grinder. Mix together the spam, onions, sweet pickles diced small, celery and mix in Miracle Whip. Makes a excellent sandwich.

I’m gonna try this ham salad recipe. When I was
10 yrs old, my family moved to Indiana, from the Mid-Atlantic PA region. The School lunch, had ham salad sandwiches once a week. After the first time trying it, I asked my mom, if I could to take my lunch to school on those days. It must have been made prepackaged and delivered to them. They were Awful. After seeing your recipe, I know I can use my leftover chunk of a 3/4 thick ham steak. I can also “tweek” the recipe. Maybe, a bit of finely shredded cheddar cheese, and perhaps a pinch of red sweet peppers? Can’t wait to try it! Thanks for the real recipe,
Billi
I also sub left over roast beef. It makes a yummy sandwich.
Jamie
Great idea! I will have to try that.
